Bernie Williams Day.org About Page
BernieWilliamsDay.org is committed to achieving two goals, the first being the retirement of the number 51 from active Yankees jerseys and the second being the establishment of an day during the Yankees season where they honor him yearly during a home game, which we propose takes place on September 13, Bernie Williams' birthday.
Please take a moment and Sign the Petition and make your voice heard so the New York Yankees honor Bernie Williams.

Bernie Williams Day.org - a History
I moved to the greater New York City area when I was 6 years old and coming from Orlando, I didn't really know what pro sports were, never mind baseball. My mom was quick to educate me in the ways of New York sport that she had grown up with. While I soon understood without question that we were Rangers, Giants and Knicks fans, I knew that being a Yankees fan was something else entirely, and not just to me and my mom. Watching guys like Don Mattingly, Rickey Henderson, Willie Randolph and Dave Winfield made those first tough years of my Yankee fandome easier, but before I knew it, along came Bernie Williams. His career started up a bit slowly, but before I knew it, the Yankees were winning World Series with a crop of new players and I was worried about Bernie Williams signing a free agent deal with the Red Sox. In my early twenties, I started getting bleacher seat season ticket packages so I could get a closer look at a guy I was beginning to realize was, in many ways, my hero. After all, what more could you ask for from somebody? It's easy to like Bernie Williams: he's a world class athlete and musician, but he's also a world class guy. Let's take those one at a time: he was a starting center fielder for the New York Yankees - that's pretty lofty company, to the tune of Joe DiMaggio and Mickey Mantle! Being the Yankees center fielder comes with expectations, and Bernie Williams handled it was grace, style and results, still ranking near the top in all time post season home runs. It's enough to look back at your life and be able to say you played professional sports, but Bernie Williams did it well - and he's an amazing guitar player. I love Paul O'Neil, but I wouldn't call the guy a world class musician. This clip says it all - check out Bernie's solo, then check out Paul O'Neil's drum fill - not quite the same level of musicianship. (Now, if we want to talk about who takes on a water cooler better, it's O'Neil, hands down. I've only seen Bernie Williams hit a water cooler once, and he's no Paul O'Neil.) Two albums and a zillion concerts later, its starting to feel like Bernie Williams is everywhere, guitar ready to show off his versatility: I've heard the guy tear up the blues, jazz, classical and latin - or a mixture of several of these things. Next, the guy is just a great human being: he does charity work with Hillside Food Outreach and even more impressively, he never gets in the sort of trouble that celebrities are so famous for. I usually take issue with folks trying to put athletes on a pedestal and herald them as role models, but in the case of Bernie Williams, I say go for it. I wouldn't be surprised to find out the Bernie Williams doesn't hail from Puerto Rico, but the planet Krypton.
As time moved on and Bernie Williams with it, I began to get impatient for the Yankees to retire his number and give him an annual day at the stadium, so I created this site. I'm not a patient guy; I thought it would happen the very first year after he was no longer with the team. After all, Bernie Williams was HUGE part of the Yankees for a long time, during which he played some exceptional ball and helped the Yankees win four World Series titles. As the fan base for this page grows on Facebook, I think more and more Yankees fans and Bernie Williams fans alike are getting impatient. So every September, we're going to send he Yankees a petition of all the digital signatures we collect until Bernie Williams gets his day. The more signatures we collect, the more effective our petition will be, so please take a moment to Sign the Petition.
